Franchises, Buying Existing Businesses and Starting From Scratch

Written by Jenifer Gifford on .

Today I received another "You're making a mistake, you need to franchise" email from a friend. To be quite honest, many of my friends think I should franchise, but let's talk frankly... I'm just not interested in that. I could give you a host of reasons why, but the only one that matters is how a "franchise" fits into my personal mission statement. It doesn't.

You see my passion, and my mission in life, lies in helping people. For me, franchising my business doesn't fit into that vision. Franchising sounds too much like W-O-R-K. Legal issues, federal government issues, state specific government issues... no thank you. So... I got to doing a little research to learn more about franchising. I think that my decision can be best summed up by this little audio clip by Dave Ramsey Franchise or Not (family and friends take note). But if that didn't convince me, there was a great article on how franchises work on

Now I don't know who the lady is who wrote the article on But I do know who Dave Ramsey is. If you aren't familiar with Dave Ramsey he's a personal money management expert, best selling author, has a nationally syndicated radio talk show on money and finances, host of the Dave Ramsey Show on Fox Network and he's passionate about helping people get out and stay out of debt. I've been listening to him for about 14 years and I started my consignment sale and Consignamania debt free by listening to him.

While I was digging around onĀ , I came across some other excellent clips that I found interesting about starting your own business, buying an existing business and purchasing a franchise. You should note that Dave keys in on doing something you're passionate about several times. You don't want to have a J-O-B. Just because you can, doesn't always mean you should. Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life (I don't know who said that, but it is so true!) Dave also keys in on how YOU are the secret ingredient to your businesses success. VERY IMPORTANT!
